Chairman: Katy Clarke

Katy has been intoxicated by The Magic of Swanwick since 1988.

Katy ClarkeShe has served previously on the committee, is a past vice chairman, and has led courses and workshops at the Summer School.

Katy is a published writer of articles, fiction, scripts for children's radio (BBC), poetry and drama. Before moving to Devon, Katy was anchor tutor to Writability in Ayr, tutor to writers' groups, adjudicator and a past president of Ayr Writers' Club.

Over the past several years, Katy has spoken on radio and TV on specialist subjects.

She taught creative writing to sixth-form students, and was writing tutor to adults in Devon.

With a huge interest in motivation, presentation and personal development, Katy enjoys this element of coaching beginners and writers who want to make the leap from being 'pre-published' to published.

Vice-Chairman: Diana Wimbs

Diana Wimbs Diana has been a copywriter for more than 20 years and has worked on major advertising and PR campaigns for clients including BT, American Express, BUPA, Legal & General, British Gas, Nat West and ICI.

She came to Swanwick for the first time in 1997 and didn't admit for days that she was a copywriter because she was so awestruck at being in the company of 'real' writers.

Since then, Diana has been a Course Leader three times and has also conducted a number of workshops/sessions on copywriting. Her book Freelance Copywriting (published by A&C Black) was inspired by that first magical visit to Swanwick.

Diana joined the committee as Publicity Manager in 2005/6, a year that saw the summer school return to 'House Full' notices for the first time in recent years.

She initiated the colourful new Swanwick signature logo as a brand image for the School and incorporates it, wherever possible, with a designer image of the Hayes for advertising and PR purposes.

In 2007, Diana's role on the committee expanded from being a PRO to a VICE. Her friends always said she'd end up that way.

Secretary: Jean Sutton

jean Sutton Jean has written women's plays and short stories.

She has also, while working full-time, contributed in-house material to the Fire Service magazine In Touch.

Jean has been coming to Swanwick since 1973 and was elected Secretary at the 2001 AGM.

Jean it is who effortlessly deals with school bookings and attends to room allocations amongst a million other tasks, unsung by herself.

Without Jean's quiet administrative miracles most Swanwickers would probably have to sleep in the car park.

Treasurer: Peter Lyons

Peter Lyons Peter combined legal and playwriting careers for many years.

Retiring from the former to make room for the latter, he now combines that with managing the School's finances, and writing project admin.

John Lamont

john LamontJohn has had a varied background in research, engineering, management and therapies, among a few other things. Most of his writing has been non-fictional, technical and pretty boring but for as long as he can remember he's really loved writing comedy.

He’s always enjoyed writing - even more so since he started coming to Swanwick eight years ago.

In his time at Swanwick he has been a happy attendee, a workshop leader, a course leader and a main speaker --- but not all at the same time.

Nowadays he spends a lot of his time teaching, speaking about motivation and working with groups and individuals.

Fiona McFadzean

FionaMcFadzeanFiona laid down her seventh consecutive appearance at Swanwick in 2007.

She regards Swanwick as her week of the year, and in 2006 she was the second curtain from the left in the panto.

Fiona has always loved writing and has been especially involved with drama.

More recently she has taken to crime in the shape of her first novel.

Fiona has served on the committee of her two local writing clubs and the Scottish Association of Writers and is looking forward to doing the same for Swanwick.

Felicity Margolis

Felicity MargolisArriving as a very shy and nervous novice writer in 1994, Felicity was bowled over by the fun and warmth of the people at the Writers’ Summer School and hasn’t missed a year since.

Three years ago, Felicity was thrilled that her first book ‘Surviving the Special Educational Needs System: How to be a Velvet Bulldozer’ was published through Jessica Kingsley Publishers under the pen name of Sandy Row. ‘Sandy’ now gives talks all over the country. She credits her success to all that she has learned, and the people she has met, at Swanwick.

Felicity has led discussion groups and has organised the daily ‘Lift Up Your Heart’ slots for the past five years and has sung in Swanwick Revues and pantos. Shy no more - thanks to WSS!!

Felicity owns a book called ‘Bury my heart at W H Smiths’ – she says we can bury hers at Swanwick!!
