Flying Swanwickers

After flying to Nottingham EMA (which is really East Midlands Airport), the stop for the local bus (aka the airline shuttle) to Derby is directly outside the arrivals building.

Alight from the bus at Derby rail station if you are connecting with the Swanwick school coach (see below).

Otherwise, stay on to Derby bus terminus to connect with the 91 or 92 route to Mansfield which in August 2007 was at terminus J2 a little way along the street.

Ask to be dropped at the Gate Inn beside Hayes Lane at Swanwick village and foot it from there.

It's a pleasant stroll.

Fares from the airport to Derby were £2.70 and from Derby onwards £2.70 single (2007) and change was given on the buses.

Swanwick Coach

coach cartoonA Swanwick private coach picks up Swanwickers at Derby train station on Saturday afternoon and deposits them back at the station early on the following Friday morning for a return fare of £10.

This service must be booked with the school and tickets produced to board the coach. It's no use turning up with a smile. You need the ticket, and the smile.

Training Swanwickers

Take a mainline train (from London it is St Pancras, for instance) to Derby station and you could meet the above pre-arranged coach at the station.

Otherwise, take the 91 or 92 route to Mansfield which in August 2007 was at terminus J2 in the centre of Derby.

The journey from Derby to the Hayes Conference Centre takes 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic.

As well, Alfreton station is about three miles from the Hayes Conference Centre but seems longer on a hot day if you decide to walk and it's uphill, mostly, so be warned if you have a heavy load.

It has a limited train service but taxis connect to the arrivals.

Driving Swanwickers

The Hayes Conference Centre is five miles from the M1.

From Junction 28 take the A38 dual carriageway towards Alfreton and Derby.

Then take the B6179 for half a mile towards Swanwick and Ripley.

At the traffic lights in Swanwick, turn left towards Somercotes.

Some 550 metres down the road turn right into Hayes Lane.

The Conference Centre is straight ahead.

Smile.

We are waiting for you.
